Episode 3

Hello :) Ok, so I just watched the third episode of season one of Firefly and it was a pretty good one!  There were a lot of interesting parts and new information about the characters that I picked up on.  There was one quote that really stood out to me though.  Captain Mal said something like, “ how do you deal with something like that, you don’t you become it”.  I have given this a lot of thought and I don’t know if I can accept that as true or not.  Pretty much he is saying if you go through something where someone has hurt you or people around you in some way, the way you deal with it is to become like it.  There was this man who witnessed his whole ship get murdered by people who have lost touch with society.  Later on in the show he goes crazy and begins trying to be like those people.  So my questions are, does the same thing apply in reality?  Would people be more lenient towards you if they knew your back round?  How did he come to this conclusion? I have had some friends go through some pretty scary things and they haven’t changed like that, for them this did not apply at all.  I think on this one I’m going to have to disagree and maybe research it a little more.  I’m very interested in seeing if there actually is a theory out there like this!

  1. Hi LeeAnn,
The theme that you are talking about in your blog actually does exist! Being a big fan of CSI shows, there are many cases of people that experience something and then start to become it. It is usually involved in their childhood or is rather scarring. Another way to look at it is if someone were to hurt someone close to you the most natural reactoin is to want revenge. So if it were an act of violence, the person who wants revenge will probably want to use force. Anyways, a very nice quote you chose to analyze. Let me know how your research goes!
